Have You Considered a Hypoallergenic Exotic Pet?

June 1 2020

If you’re severely allergic to dog or cat dander, it’s unlikely that you can own a furry friend. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be the proud owner of an animal companion! There are several unique pets that are mostly or completely hypoallergenic—your Salisbury, NC veterinarian lists some below.

Reptiles and Amphibians

Reptile and amphibian pets like frogs, turtles, snakes, iguanas, and other lizards don’t have fur the way cats, dogs, and other mammalian pets do. This means that they’re completely hypoallergenic for owners! Even though some of these exotic pets shed their skin, it doesn’t usually cause problems. Plus, reptiles and amphibians are contained in terrariums, making for a controllable and contained habitat.

Fish

Unless you’re allergic to water, you can almost certainly keep fish as pets without any problem! It’s great fun to build a fish tank, whether it’s saltwater or freshwater, and observe your fascinating pets swim about. Although fish can’t exactly be taken for walks or cuddled on the sofa, they make wonderful companions.

Ferrets

Ferrets are closely related to weasels, and their coats of fur are different than those of dogs or cats. They don’t give off dander the way the more typical house pets do, and they’re often great choices for those who suffer from pet allergies. Ferrets are inquisitive, unique pets who can even be trained to use a litter box—ask your vet whether or not a ferret might make a good pet for you and your family.

Arachnid Pets

It goes without saying that arachnid pets, such as spiders and scorpions, aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. But if you’re in the market for a unique pet and aren’t squeamish about these sort of things, an arachnid just might suit you perfectly. Tarantulas are some of the most common arachnid pets and are very easy to care for. Do your research ahead of time so that you know what you’re getting into, and feel free to ask your veterinarian for advice on how to care for these fascinating creatures.

Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs are sometimes considered “starter pets,” especially for young children, but they certainly don’t have to be. They’re extremely easy to care for and are fascinating to collect for individuals of any age!
