Are you hosting a family dinner this Thanksgiving? It’s always wonderful to get together with our loved ones. Even in a turbulent year like this, there are always things to be grateful for. Our feathered friends definitely belong on that list! However, this can be a dangerous holiday for Polly. A Rowan County, NC vet lists some common hazards for bird owners to be aware of.
Foods
It’s fine to give your winged friend a special treat, but stick to things that are safe for her. Some dangerous foods include garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; avocados; chocolate; caffeine; alcohol; and anything that contains xylitol. Ask your vet for more information on safe and unsafe foods.
Cooking Fumes
Those mouthwatering smells coming from the kitchen may be absolutely delightful to us, but they can be dangerous to Polly. Many types of modern cookware emit fumes that are toxic to birds. On days like today, when every burner in the house may be going, you’ll need to take extra precautions to protect your pet from harmful vapors.
Guests
Guests shouldn’t pose any direct risk to your bird. The issue here is more that they could unknowingly endanger her. Fumes are one concern. Things like cigarette smoke, strong perfumes, and even hairspray can all hurt Polly’s sensitive lungs. You also want to make sure that no one leaves a door or window open, or leaves out something like medication, which would be dangerous to your pet. Also, keep in mind that birds are very small and fragile, and they can get frightened easily. Even a house full of savvy bird lovers can be stressful for our feathered pals. Consider keeping your pet in a quiet back room for the day.
Flames
Candles, fireplaces, incense burners, and potpourri burners are all dangerous to birds. The fumes, as mentioned above, are one concern. Polly could also venture too close and get singed. If you want to make your home smell nice, get bird-safe candles, and use them when your pet is caged. Or, just boil some cloves or cinnamon.
Other Pets
Many people take their dogs with them when visiting others. If Fido is on your guest list, keep Polly in her cage for the day. Better safe than sorry!
