May 4th is National Bird Day! Our feathered friends are definitely something to celebrate. Birds are beautiful, fascinating, and often absolutely hilarious. This is a great time to reflect on these beautiful and diverse animals, and perhaps show our appreciation for them. A Salisbury, NC vet lists some ways to celebrate in this article.
Birdfeeder
Set out a few things to help the birds in your area. Birdfeeders are great. Even if you only have a small balcony, you can put up something small, like a hummingbird feeder. If you have a little more room, add a birdbath or even some birdhouses. Keep in mind that different types of birds have their own preferences for size, height, and style. Do some research.
Support Local Wildlife
There are many organizations that help rescue and rehome pet birds. Consider donating to one, or perhaps even volunteering. You can also help by supporting larger organizations, such as the Audubon Society.
Keep Kitty In
Did you know that cats kill billions of small birds every year? Fluffy may look cute and innocent, but she’s, well, kind of a murderer. Keep your tiny lion indoors. This will not only help protect local birds, it will also keep your feline buddy safe.
Bird Entertainment
Why not pick a bird movie for the night’s entertainment? If you want something for the family, you can’t go wrong with cute films like
Rio
or
Happy Feet
. If you have tissues on hand, opt for an older classic, like
Fly Away Home
or
March of The Penguins. There are also some great documentaries on our feathered friends.
Pamper Polly
Do you have a pet bird of your own? Today is the day to really spoil Polly a bit. Pick up some new toys for your feathered buddy. Perches are another great option. You may also want to spend some time with your cute pet. Give her a bath, play her favorite song, or, if she talks, start teaching her a new phrase.
Spread The Word
Do you have cute pictures of your feathered friend? Have you recently seen a funny video featuring birds? Share these on social media, and help raise awareness about this special day. We’d love to see this unofficial holiday go to the birds!
