This month of November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes affects both people and pets, and it’s a very dangerous disease. And of course, bringing your furry pal to the vet every year for screenings and panels is crucial. However, it’s also good for you to know some of the signs to look for. A local vet talks about some of the more common signs of diabetes below.
Increased Water Consumption
Diabetic pets are often almost always thirsty. You might see Fluffy or Fido drinking out of the toilet bowl or draining their water bowl quickly. (Diabetic cats may try to stick their noses into your water glass, but that’s not enough to go on in and of itself, since healthy kitties do this too.)
Frequent Urination
As might be expected, frequent urination goes right along with increased water intake. Fluffy may not make it to her litterbox, while your dog may have accidents in the house.
Disappearing Food
Does your four-legged friend act like they’re starving after scarfing down their food the moment you feed them? When she spots the bottom of her food bowl, does Fluffy go into meltdown mode? Diabetes could be to blame.
Weight Loss
Even if they are eating enough to account for a whole other pet, diabetic pets often lose weight. It’s a good idea to monitor your furry buddy’s weight by weighing him regularly.
Poor Coat
Your pet’s pretty fur may also be affected by diabetes. Your four-legged friend may look dull, dry, or greasy. And Fluffy may stop grooming herself, which will make her fur look even worse.
Lethargy
We know, some of our patients are just natural-born couch potatoes. But if your pet seems to be sleeping more than usual, talk to your vet.
Recurring Infections
Infections that won’t heal properly are another marker to look for. This includes UTIs, skin problems, and others.
Clouded Eyes
Unlike the other things we’ve mentioned, this one is unique since it only applies to dogs. However, it is something to watch for with Fido.

Contact your vet right away, if you notice any of these warning signs, or any other unusual behavior. The sooner an issue is caught and treated, the better!
