Meet The Maine Coon

December 15 2021

Do you favor cats with a lot of fluff? If so, you’ve probably been absolutely charmed by a Maine Coon at some point. These super cute felines are not only personable, they’re also big and loveable. And you’ll probably be seeing more than a few Maine Coon kittens on holiday cards over the next couple weeks. A veterinarian discusses this beloved breed below.

History

Where did Fluffy originate from? No one is quite sure, exactly. One possibility is that the Norwegian Forest Cats brought over by Vikings are the original ancestors of Maine Coons. Another legend involves Marie Antoinette, who’s credited with the famous quote ‘Let Them Eat Cake,’ which resulted in her beheading in 1793. According to the story, Antoinette had shipped her most precious belongings to America when she was planning to flee France. Among the cargo were six fluffy kitties, which may have been Siberians or Turkish Angoras. And of course, Antoinette never made it to America. However, her feline pals were brought to Wiscasset, Maine, where they inevitably set about mingling with the local felines and making some adorable kittens.

Temperament

The Maine Coon is an extremely affectionate and lovable cat. Talkative and playful, these kitties have a lot of ‘purrsonality.’ They’re quite talkative, and like to communicate with chirps and squeaks.

Size

Maine Coons can grow to large sizes. Many of them have broken records for weight and size. There’s the longest cat on record, named Stewie. He was more than 4 feet long from the tip of his nose to the end of his fluffy tail. And Samson, another 4-foot Maine Coon, held the title of New York’s biggest cat.

Celebrekitties

There have also been several famous Maine Coons. There’s Pebbles, the cat from the Harry Potter movie, and the first cloned cat, named Little Nicky. Mr. Vivo is another famous kitty. He’s a majestic floofer with his own Youtube channel. You can also find lots of these pretty felines on Instagram.

Popularity

It’s probably no surprise to hear that Fluffy is the official cat of the state of Maine. They’re also very popular in other states. Though, that hasn’t always been the case. These cute felines were all the rage … and then the Persian entered the picture. After that, their popularity plummeted. And by the 1950’s, they were almost extinct. Fortunately, fans stepped in to keep the breed going, and many more adorable kittens were born.
