Resolutions For Reptile Owners

January 3 2022

Happy New Year everybody! Traditionally, this is a day for people to set goals for themselves for the upcoming year. Change and growth are always important, no matter your age or where you are in life. This is something that’s also very important for pet owners. To keep your animal companion happy and healthy, it’s important that you understand their needs. Out of all of our patients, reptiles are the most likely to be misunderstood by their owners. Below, a vet lists some resolutions for people with lizards, snakes, and turtles.

Do More Research

Reptiles can be truly fascinating. And the more you learn about them, the more interesting they become! Even if you’ve had pet reptiles all your life, there’s always something new to learn. Consider investing in a few good source books or magazines, or just go on an online reading binge. Even if you only learn just a few new things, it’ll still be time well spent!

Check Your Equipment

Specific temperature, lighting, and humidity conditions are things that many of our reptilian buddies require. Creating and monitoring these conditions requires special equipment. If your pet’s gear is old or sub-par, you may be getting inaccurate readings. If it’s time for an upgrade, be sure to put that on your to-do list this year.

Replace Bulbs

Many specialized light bulbs will get weaker long before they burn out. You may not notice this, and you may not, since the bulbs can appear fine to the naked eye. Be sure to replace these regularly!

Watch For Warning Signs

As personable and charming as reptiles can be, they’re not usually as charismatic as cats, dogs, and other animals. This can make it difficult to notice behavioral changes that indicate illness or stress. Research is helpful here, but just observing your pet is also important. This should actually be something you enjoy. Reptiles are beautiful and captivating to watch!

Share The Love

Of all the pets, reptiles have gotten a bad rep, which really is unfortunate. They play crucial roles in supporting our natural environment, not to mention, they’re also pretty darned cute. Snap some photos of your reptilian pet, and use them to get the word out about reptiles and why it’s important to protect their welfare. Who knows? You may just change someone’s mind about these amazing creatures!
