Ideas for Doggy Date Nights

February 1 2024

The 3rd of February was Dog Date Night! Of course, there’s no law that says this special day can only be celebrated on the 3rd. In fact, it’s probably safe to say that if Fido had his way, every day would be Doggy Date Night. Your canine buddy really just wants to spend time with you! Indulge those adorable requests for belly rubs and playtime. The time we spend with our four-legged friends is precious, and often goes by much too quickly. A local Rowan County, NCvet lists some great ways to get that cute tail wagging in this article.

What Is Doggy Date Night?

Doggy Date Night may be one of the funnier pet holidays on our calendar, but it’s not as silly as you may think. In fact, it’s a reminder to spend quality time with your dog. Our canine companions are incredibly loyal as well: they not only go the extra mile for us, but have even sacrificed their lives to help us.  Fido doesn’t ask for much in return for his loyalty, aside from food, walks, and a comfortable shelter. (Bacon, toys, treats, and belly rubs also do not go unappreciated, of course.)

But it’s not just for your pet either. Hanging out with Fido is beneficial to you too! Studies show that we benefit both mentally and physically from spending time with our canine companions. Besides keeping us fit, our furry buddies also lower our blood pressure, reduce our risk of stroke and heart attack risk, and soothe anxiety, stress, and depression. Dogs have definitely earned the honorary title of Man’s Best Friend!

We actually recommend carving out time every week for your pet. And that really is the point here. Doggy Date Night isn’t just about indulging your own cravings for excitement; it’s about creating lasting memories with your four-legged companion. The agenda doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. All that matters is that your canine pal feels loved and safe.

Without further adieu … here are our top suggestions:

One of the cutest things about our four-legged pals is the fact that they are so playful. A cute new toy will definitely fit the bill, but you can also have fun with your pup by giving some classic children’s games a pupgrade. Hide and Seek is a good one. The Three Cups can also be made dog-friendly.

Want to head outdoors? Plan a game of fetch with glow-in-the-dark balls or frisbees to add a touch of magic to the night.

Movie Time

watch a movie that features Man’s Best Friend. You’ll find a lot of great ones out there.  Some of our favorites include A Dog’s Purpose, Hachi, Marley And Me, and Hotel For Dogs. If you want a tearjerker, Old Yeller is a good choice. Just make sure you have plenty of tissues.

Of course, you don’t have to stay in. Many drive-in theaters are showing classic movies. This is a fun way to spend time with Fido. Drive-ins may never regain the popularity they once had in the 50’s and 60’s. (Obviously, this is only an option if the drive-in allows dogs, and if Fido is comfortable in your car.)

You can also opt for a cozy outdoor film showing. All you need are blankets and a projector.

Search For Hidden Treasures

Our canine pals really enjoy sniffing out treats and treasure. Fido’s sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than ours. Hide some treats and snacks for your pup to find. Just remember to pick them up afterwards.

Training Time

Many dogs enjoy learning new things! It’s important to start with the basics, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Once your four-legged friend has mastered these, teach him some fun tricks, like Shake and Gimme Paw.

A Special Dinner

Now, let’s talk about the biggest detail – the menu.  whip up a dog-friendly feast for your furry friend and yourself. Treat your pup to some homemade dog biscuits shaped like hearts or bones. There are lots of menus online.

For the human portion of the menu, Just make sure to stick with foods that are safe for him. Plain, cooked meat, fish, or poultry, without the skin, bones, or fat, is a good choice. Just be sure to avoid any ingredients that might be harmful to your dog – we want tails wagging, not upset stomachs!

(Note: Just because it’s a casual doggy date night doesn’t mean you can’t get a little fancy. Dress up your pup in a stylish bandana or a cute bowtie.)

Doggy Shopping Spree

Many pet stores have started welcoming in their furry pals.  It’s always fun to let Fido pick out a toy on his own. If your dog is calm and well-behaved in public, let him go choose a new plaything.

Spa Session

Your pup may not be thrilled about going to the salon, but he will definitely feel clean and fresh afterwards. Don’t skip the pawdicure! Nail trims are crucial. Overgrown claws may sound minor, but can actually cause all sorts of issues with your pup’s stance and grip. Keep Fido’s toe beans moist and protected by applying paw balm or wax. Ask your Rowan County, NCveterinarian for more information.

This option is somewhat weather-dependent for most places, but those of us here in Florida get to enjoy balmy weather year-round. If it’s nice out, take Fido to a new park or trail.

Group Date

There’s no law that says you have to keep Doggy Date Night for just you and your pet. Invite that special someone along, or make it a time to catch up with your bestie.

Fido may also enjoy some company. Dogs are social animals, and they thoroughly enjoy spending time with their furry friends. Have some friends bring their dogs over. provide toys and treats for the pups, and arrange a potluck-style meal for the humans. make sure Fido’s playmates are polite, well-behaved, and up to date on their vaccines and parasite control.

Doggy Photo Session

Our canine pals are very photogenic, and they always look great in photos.  Take some adorable pictures of your pet! This is a pawesome time to strike a pose with your pooch and let the world see the bond that makes Doggy Date Night so special.

Tips For Doggy Date Nights

Doggy Date Night doesn’t have to be restricted to one night a year. In fact, we recommend doing at least one of these activities with your dog every week. It’s important to spend quality time with your furry best friend regularly.

Just make sure to consider your dog’s size, health, and personality when picking the agenda. For instance, a Golden Retriever might enjoy a hike, while a Chihuahua may prefer to play Fetch in the living room. For more information, consult your Rowan County, NCveterinarian.

In Conclusion: Doggy Date Night reminds us to spend quality time with our canine companions, and to do something extra to show our appreciation for their friendship and love.

Contact your local Rowan County, NC pet hospital if you have questions about your dog’s health or care. We are dedicated to providing top-notch veterinary care!
