Autumn is just about here! Many of our canine patients love this time of year. Read on as a local Salisbury, NC vet offers some tips on keeping Fido happy and healthy this autumn.
Pumpkin is definitely the flavor of the month! Fido can enjoy some of this delicious treat as well. Pureed pumpkin is actually great for dogs. If you really want to get that tail going, make your pooch a delicious homemade treat. Mix pureed pumpkin with natural peanut butter, whole-wheat flour, and an egg. Cook at 350 for about 20 minutes. Instant happy pup!
Every season brings its own hazards, and fall is no different. Seasonal foliage is one concern here. Many late-blooming plants and mushrooms are toxic to dogs. Chemicals are another potential issue. At this time of year, many people fertilize their gardens and fill their vehicles with antifreeze. The chemicals used for these things are extremely toxic to Man’s Best Friend. You’ll also want to be careful with seasonal decorations. Keep anything with ropes or strings out of paw’s reach. Items that are small and/or sharp are also unsafe. Other hazards include leaf piles, candles and fireplaces, and, of course, traffic.
Temperatures can drop fast in fall. If Fido has thin fur, you may want to get him a doggie jacket for cold days. Make sure that your pup’s clothing fits him well, and isn’t tight, hot, or itchy. You’ll also want to avoid anything that restricts your dog’s vision or movement.
Pets tend to sleep more than usual in dreary weather. (We do, too.) Make sure that Fido has a warm, cozy bed to snuggle up in for all those naps! Your four-legged friend may appreciate a heated bed or a thermal blanket on cold days.
Don’t forget that Fido is running around barefoot! Snow, salt, sand, and ice can all damage your canine buddy’s paws. Stock up on pet-safe de-icing agents before the year’s first storm hits. You may also want to get into the habit of moisturizing your pup’s furry feet with paw balm or wax.
Autumns foliage can make for some absolutely gorgeous photos! Snap some cute pics of your furry pal enjoy a crisp autumn day!
